Healthcare college programs help launch careers of industry leaders

Victoria, BC - March 29, 2010 - International Women's Day has come and gone, but strong female leaders continue to play a huge role in the Canadian healthcare system. Let's take a look at some of Canada's most influential and prominent women in healthcare.

Dr. Judith Shamian, President and CEO of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), a non-profit national health organization, was presented with a Canada's Most Powerful Women Top 100 award from the Women's Executive Network last year for her work in the healthcare community. Her primary focus is to develop and strengthen Canadian communities through a new vision for home and community health care that supports seniors and their caregivers.

Michaëlle Jean, the current Governor General of Canada, is a strong social advocate for spousal and domestic abuse. Her work with women's shelters in Quebec and aid organizations for immigrant women and families has paved the way for social reforms in the Canadian healthcare system and increased support for abuse against women. Her hope is to empower women to fight for human rights and justice within Canada, but also in impoverished countries all around the world.

Dr. Elizabeth Whynot, former BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre president and recipient of the Kaiser Foundation's 2009 Excellence in Leadership Award, is best known for her extensive work in improving the lives of women and their families in B.C. She has spent most of her healthcare career working in addictions and community support, developing strategies to prevent outbreaks of HIV and Hepatitis C. Additionally, Dr. Whynot has helped support maternity and newborn care in B.C., which has no doubt brought changes and insight to healthcare industry across the country.
