Nurses in a Crisis SituationBackAre Canada's health care professionals ready to deal with a natural disaster? Victoria, BC - March 8, 2010 - On February 27, 2010 an 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule region of Chile, lasting approximately three minutes. During the course of the devastation, a reported 723 people perished, with many more missing and thousands more among those injured. Some of the fundamental concepts of nursing can be applied to disaster situations such as this, including; caring, compassion, education, advocacy, leadership, and communication. Our ability to respond to an event such as the earthquake in Chile would in large part depend on the ability of our health care professionals to effectively come together to respond to and manage such a catastrophic event. During a disaster situation, health care professionals play a key role in utilizing the skills they gained throughout their education and experience to guide their practice. Although most institutions do not have a curriculum which includes "disaster preparedness", the curriculum of the Practical Nursing program at UCW Academy of Health gives students the knowledge and skills which would allow them to be active participants if a disaster situation such as this were to occur in B.C.
